Making Friends As An Adult

Two Indian-American women talking

Making friends as an adult can be challenging. Not just situational friends – other parents at the preschool drop off friends, but real, actual friends.

There’s a reason for that. Sociologists have long noted that 3 conditions are integral for developing friendships.

  1. Proximity
  2. Repeated, unplanned interactions
  3. A setting that encourages authentic sharing.

Those 3 conditions are easily met when we are young or in college, but become more difficult as we are older. Life pulls us in different directions.

In this episode, I talk about my own struggle making friends when I moved to Hawaii with my husband 14 years ago and 4 strategies to develop close relationships even in adulthood.

She also shares her personal struggles when she moved from Boston to Hawaii 14 years ago and 4 tips for finding and maintaining friendships.

1. Staying Open to Being Connected

2. Learning to Prioritize the Friendship

3. Sharing Without Reservation

4. Not Discounting Virtual Friends
